Meet the Winner of October’s $1000 BEATDiabetes Drawing

Mark was able to improve his A1C and keep it at the goal of under 7 with the help of the BEATDiabetes program. He is a great example of how small changes over time can lead to big improvements in blood sugar control and overall health. In this interview, he shares a little about his diabetes journey and some tips for others trying to make healthy changes.

How long have you had Type 2 diabetes? Since November 2017.

What has been the biggest challenge for you in dealing with diabetes? To realize the battle would be life-long and come to grips with the potential health risks associated with the diagnosis.

What changes have you made that have helped improve your blood sugar? I made dozens of small changes that resulted in a huge change RATHER than attempt huge changes that would result in limited success. I started exercising 45 min a week, then 60, now 120 -150 min a week. I started changing what I ate 1 food at a time. Over the years it has helped me to lower my A1c from above 8 to around 6.

Why did you decide to sign-up for BEATDiabetes? I love getting the morning exercise reminder. I have a special needs child and the reminder tells me to go exercise right after I drop him at school!

How has the BEATDiabetes program helped you manage your diabetes? It made me more conscious of the many people that face the same battle I do every day.

What motivates you to make healthy choices? The reminders and informational texts from the BEATDiabetes program have really helped remind me of the consequences of poor food choices.

What advice do you have for others trying to improve their diabetes control?

  • Resign from the clean plate club.

  • Watch portion size.

  • Don't keep unhealthy foods in the house, you will eat them!

  • Any exercise is good to start.

  • 15 minutes of exercise a day for a week is 135 minutes of exercise. That will immediately impact your health.

What do you plan to do with the $1000? We are planning to travel a little over the winter break for my son!

Congratulations to Mark!

Work hard to improve your A1C and the next $1000 BEATDiabetes winner could be YOU!
